Economists dive into the financial impact of Christmas trees\u2014real and artificial alike\u2014on the U.S.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Christmas today is a big business, and one part of that is the multibillion-dollar business of selling Christmas trees. The U.S. Christmas tree industry is so large, it even has two dueling trade groups:\u00a0one that supports natural trees<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the other, artificial<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We are<\/a>\u00a0two\u00a0business school<\/a>\u00a0professors whose students asked us to explain the\u00a0economic impact<\/a>\u00a0of the winter holidays. In the holiday spirit of sharing, we\u2019re giving you some facts to discuss while trimming your tree.<\/p>\n

Where to buy a natural Christmas tree \u2013 or chop one down yourself<\/h2>\n

There are three different ways to get a natural Christmas tree.<\/p>\n

First, you can go into a national forest and chop down your own. Relatively few Americans do this, even though a permit costs\u00a0$10 or less<\/a>, because\u00a0government rules<\/a>\u00a0require that the tree you chop must be\u00a0more than 200 feet from<\/a>\u00a0any road, campground or recreation area. Since dragging a tree destroys its branches and needles, the 200-foot rule means that large, heavy trees have to be carried a fair distance through often snowy woods.<\/p>\n

Your second option is to buy or chop down a tree at a local Christmas tree farm. Christmas tree farms got a big promotional boost when\u00a0Taylor Swift revealed she grew up on one<\/a>, but she\u2019s hardly alone: There are\u00a0nearly 3,000 Christmas tree farms<\/a>\u00a0across the U.S., according to the Department of Agriculture\u2019s most recent figures. These farms sell around 12 million trees a year.<\/p>\n

While being a Christmas tree farmer sounds idyllic,\u00a0it isn\u2019t very profitable<\/a>, since Christmas trees take\u00a0over a decade to grow<\/a>\u00a0large enough to sell. Long lead times combined with\u00a0changing and unpredictable weather<\/a>\u00a0have pushed many of these farms out of business.\u00a0Almost 500 U.S. Christmas tree farms shuttered<\/a>\u00a0between 2014 and 2019, the USDA found.<\/p>\n

The third way to buy a tree is from a local retailer that imports trees. In 2022, the\u00a0U.S. imported<\/a>\u00a0almost 3 million natural Christmas trees,\u00a0primarily from Canada<\/a>. Imports have been growing steadily: In 2014, the U.S. imported only half as many trees.<\/p>\n

Together, this means that in 2022, roughly 15 million locally grown or imported natural trees were sold in the country.<\/p>\n

Some people like to buy their trees from a nonprofit, like\u00a0the Boy Scouts<\/a>.\u00a0These fundraisers<\/a>\u00a0are also supplied from local Christmas tree farms or imports.<\/p>\n

An artificial tree\u2019s journey from China to your living room<\/h2>\n

Artificial trees are popular<\/a>\u00a0with people who don\u2019t like the\u00a0mess and fuss of natural trees<\/a>. Replica trees\u00a0primarily come from China<\/a>, and most are made in the Chinese\u00a0city of Yiwu<\/a>. The\u00a0U.S. imported<\/a>\u00a0over 20 million artificial trees in 2022 alone.<\/p>\n

And they\u2019re becoming increasingly common. In 2014, the U.S. imported 11 million artificial trees and sold almost 22 million natural trees. This means that back in 2014, almost two real trees were purchased for every artificial one. A decade later, natural tree sales had fallen to around 15 million, but over 20 million artificial trees were imported.<\/p>\n

One result of the shift to replica trees is a reduction in house fires. Natural trees that\u00a0aren\u2019t watered dry out<\/a>\u00a0and sometimes catch on fire. In 1980, the U.S. saw\u00a0about 850 Christmas tree fires that caused 80 people<\/a>\u00a0to be injured. Four decades later, the number of annual fires fell to 180, with only eight injuries.<\/p>\n

Why Christmas trees are so expensive<\/h2>\n

Some people get sticker shock when they see how much Christmas trees cost. Those shocking prices don\u2019t come from the wholesale level. Last year, wholesalers importing entire shipping containers paid $22 for each artificial tree, on average,\u00a0according to U.S. government statistics<\/a>. Importers of natural trees paid roughly the same price. Together, artificial and natural importers paid over a half billion dollars for trees to sell in 2022.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, there are no official statistics on how much Americans pay for Christmas trees at the retail level. There\u2019s a general consensus that\u00a0artificial trees cost more than natural trees<\/a>, but the extra money may be worth it because they last more than one season.<\/p>\n

Consumer surveys by the two competing trade groups suggest that people paid\u00a0in the range of $80<\/a>\u00a0to $100<\/a>\u00a0for their trees in 2022. This means\u00a0the markup<\/a>\u00a0on Christmas trees is around 400% to 500%. That\u2019s about the same as\u00a0a pair of designer jeans or a drink from a hotel minibar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Multiplying the $80 to $100 price by the 15 million natural trees and 20 million artificial trees sold in 2022 means Christmas trees are roughly a $3 billion business annually \u2014 without including any extra money spent on the decorations.<\/p>\n

So, with so many options, how do you settle on which sort of tree to buy? Price,\u00a0environmental factors<\/a>, convenience and even allergies are all important factors to consider. There\u2019s no easy answer. One of us can\u2019t decide and has multiple trees, ranging from a 12-inch artificial tree handed down from his grandmother to a 7-foot-tall natural Fraser fir purchased at his local Christmas tree farm.<\/p>\n

Whatever you decide \u2013 natural, artificial, both or no tree at all \u2013 just remember to add a dash of cheer to your winter celebration. After all, the best things about the season are free.<\/p>\n
