But only his symptoms seemed to linger and worsen.<\/p>\n<p>Later that year, Maxey had his first surgery in Uruguay to repair infected sores in his intestines and to remove fistulas &#8212; tunnel-like passageways that reroute waste to the wrong places.<\/p>\n<div id=\"em-pullquote-3\" class=\"left\" ref=\"em-pullquote-3\">\n<aside data-e2e=\"ia-pull-quote\" id=\"ia-pull-quote\" align=\"left\" class=\"ia-module-container ia-pull-quote left\">\n<blockquote class=\"pq-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"pq-title\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cYou can&#8217;t sugarcoat it. Otherwise, you&#8217;re going to be in some serious trouble when you need help.\u201d\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<small class=\"pq-description\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tErron Maxey<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/small>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/aside><\/div>\n<p>But it took 5 more years and several more surgeries before doctors officially diagnosed Maxey with Crohn\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>That was a difficult time for Maxey. \u201cI&#8217;d have upset stomach, chronic diarrhea, constant pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019d be days when my energy level was really low, and, you know, I\u2019d just go ahead and tell my coaching staff, \u2018Hey, you know what? I ate something bad. I just don&#8217;t have it today.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For a world traveler, getting the right treatment wasn\u2019t always easy. It was often tough just to get his medication on the road.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Even when Maxey managed to get the drugs shipped to him, a complex web of laws and regulations in other countries sometimes barred him from taking delivery. Once, a customs official destroyed $4,500 worth of medication right in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>After so many years with Crohn\u2019s and numerous surgeries, including a major one at Emory University in Atlanta in 2018, Maxey says he has learned to be very clear with those closest to him about his needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs graphic and as vulgar as it might be, you have to go through it so your loved ones know how to help take care of you. You can&#8217;t sugarcoat it. Otherwise you&#8217;re going to be in some serious trouble when you need help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s also important, he says, to reassure those who care for you most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, you&#8217;re definitely nervous because you know that this stuff can take you out,\u201d Maxey says. \u201cBut at the same time, hey, you know what? We&#8217;re going to get through this. We&#8217;re going to figure it out. You know, this isn&#8217;t my first rodeo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, Maxey is waiting in limbo in Atlanta for the pandemic to pass. He hopes to play professional basketball for at least 2 more years.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div data-page=\"2\">\n<section>\n<p>Natalie Hayden got her diagnosis in July 2005, 2 months after finishing her undergraduate degree at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI.<\/p>\n<div id=\"em-image-5\" class=\"left\" ref=\"em-image-5\">\n<aside data-e2e=\"ia-image\" align=\"left\" class=\"ia-module-container ia-image left\" data-metric-module=\"ia-img-soc\">\n<figure>\n<div class=\"main\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.wbmdstatic.com\/vim\/live\/webmd\/consumer_assets\/site_images\/article_thumbnails\/features\/_2020\/10_2020\/voices_of_crohns_disease_features\/1800x1200_voices_of_crohns_disease_hayden.jpg?resize=300:*\" alt=\"Natalie Hayden\" style=\"height:auto;\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><figcaption>\n<p class=\"module_description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNatalie Hayden\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside><\/div>\n<p>\u201cUp until that point, I was a picture of health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms started soon after graduation. \u201cI knew something was wrong because any time I would eat or drink anything, I was in horrible <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/pain-management\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">pain<\/a>. So I just stopped eating and lost about 15 pounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayden says that besides excruciating <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/pain-management\/abdominal-pain-causes-treatments\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">abdominal pain<\/a>, she had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/covid\/what-is-a-fever\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">fevers<\/a> of 105 and was so worn out that she couldn\u2019t climb the stairs of her parents\u2019 house.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, her worried mother, a nurse, rushed Hayden to the hospital. It took the emergency room doctor only a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/annual-physical-examinations\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">physical exam<\/a> and a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/what-is-a-ct-scan\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">CT scan<\/a> to declare that Hayen had Crohn\u2019s. She was admitted immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Hayden says she has blocked out much of those first blurry days. She remembers the shock. She remembers a lot of tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hardest part of the diagnosis is dealing with the change to your identity. You think of this disease as a scarlet letter. You feel as though you&#8217;re forever changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section><pagebreak\/>\n<p>Since her diagnosis 15 years ago, Hayden has built a career as a journalist and blogger and a rich family life with her husband, Bobby, and their two children, Reid and Sophia.<\/p>\n<p>She also has gained a new perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Having Crohn\u2019s \u201cdoesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t follow your career aspirations. It doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;re not going to find love. It doesn&#8217;t mean you can\u2019t be a parent someday,\u201d Hayden says. \u201cYou can do all those things with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/ibd-crohns-disease\/inflammatory-bowel-syndrome\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">IBD<\/a>. Your journey might just look a little bit different than your peers.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe disease is a big part of you, it&#8217;s not all of you,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Hayden has been in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cancer\/remission-what-does-it-mean\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">remission<\/a> since she had surgery in 2015. But she still has bad days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#8217;t try to be a superhero and fight it at home. If you can nip it in the bud before it becomes a full-out flare, then you can save yourself a hospitalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something people don\u2019t talk about enough, Hayden says, is the loneliness that can come with Crohn\u2019s. Even supportive friends and family can\u2019t quite grasp how it may shape every facet of your life.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section><pagebreak\/>\n<p>The internet can offer a way to connect with others who truly understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want people to know that they&#8217;re not alone in their journey,\u201d Hayden says. \u201cWe&#8217;ve all been there in your shoes, and we understand the severity of what you&#8217;re going through.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div data-page=\"3\">\n<section>\n<p>Vern Laine was extremely active and ice skated competitively while growing up in a small town in British Columbia, Canada. Then, in 1988, out of nowhere, he started getting terrible stomach pain that lasted for days at a time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"em-image-7\" class=\"left\" ref=\"em-image-7\">\n<aside data-e2e=\"ia-image\" align=\"left\" class=\"ia-module-container ia-image left\" data-metric-module=\"ia-img-soc\">\n<figure>\n<div class=\"main\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.wbmdstatic.com\/vim\/live\/webmd\/consumer_assets\/site_images\/article_thumbnails\/features\/_2020\/10_2020\/voices_of_crohns_disease_features\/1800x1200_voices_of_crohns_disease_laine.jpg?resize=300:*\" alt=\"Vern Laine\" style=\"height:auto;\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><figcaption>\n<p class=\"module_description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tVern Laine\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside><\/div>\n<p>For months, Laine\u2019s doctors suggested his symptoms were \u201cjust <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/heartburn-gerd\/gas-causes-treatments\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">gas<\/a>\u201d or dismissed them as \u201cin your head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he finally got his diagnosis, the first thing Laine wanted to know was how to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately,\u201d his doctor replied, \u201cthere is no cure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shock of that answer took a long time to sink in fully, Laine recalls. That started a 3-decade journey in managing the effects of Crohn\u2019s, both physical and mental.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section><pagebreak\/>\n<p>One of the hardest parts of the disease is the uncertainty. \u201cYou could be fine for months and then you&#8217;re in the hospital. Sometimes it can hit in minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That, Laine says, is especially hard on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sex-relationships\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">relationships<\/a>. \u201cYou can never be firm on plans &#8212; ever!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another challenge is that many people simply don\u2019t understand how ill Crohn\u2019s can make a person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe disease is invisible. Just because I don\u2019t look sick, does not mean I&#8217;m not suffering inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even after multiple surgeries, including one for an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/colorectal-cancer\/colorectal-cancer-ostomy-overview\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">ostomy<\/a> to remove his waste in a pouch, some people tell him, \u201cYou don\u2019t <i>look<\/i> sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That can take a psychological toll, which is something Laine wished he knew more about in the early years of his disease. At one point, he tried to take his own life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany doctors treat the symptoms and the disease itself and forget about the mental <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/stress-management\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">stress<\/a>. There&#8217;s stigma and embarrassment behind having a bowel disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section><pagebreak\/>\n<p>Emotional support, whether from family and friends, group <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/mental-health\/mental-health-psychotherapy\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">therapy<\/a>, or one-on-one <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/video\/farrell-therapy-counseling\" data-crosslink-type=\"video\">counseling<\/a>, is vital to navigating life with Crohn\u2019s, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Laine has turned to painting as his own art therapy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can put paint to canvas and paint what I feel at that moment in time,\u201d he writes on his blog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s helped me tremendously to divert any pain or thoughts of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/depression\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">depression<\/a>. It can help take my mind off things and I can be in my own world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div data-page=\"4\">\n<section>\n<p>Stephanie Hughes is a writer, triathlete, mom, and wife. Her journey with Crohn\u2019s started when she was diagnosed in 1999 at 13 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Though Hughes clearly has a sense of humor about her disease &#8212; her blog is called The Stolen Colon &#8212; there have been plenty of difficulties along the way.<\/p>\n<div id=\"em-image-8\" class=\"left\" ref=\"em-image-8\">\n<aside data-e2e=\"ia-image\" align=\"left\" class=\"ia-module-container ia-image left\" data-metric-module=\"ia-img-soc\">\n<figure>\n<div class=\"main\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.wbmdstatic.com\/vim\/live\/webmd\/consumer_assets\/site_images\/article_thumbnails\/features\/_2020\/10_2020\/voices_of_crohns_disease_features\/1800x1200_voices_of_crohns_disease_hughes.jpg?resize=300:*\" alt=\"Stephanie Hughes\" style=\"height:auto;\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><figcaption>\n<p class=\"module_description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStephanie Hughes\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside><\/div>\n<p>One of the hardest moments, says Hughes, was in 2012, when she decided to have the surgery for a permanent ostomy, a hole in your <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/pain-management\/guide\/abdominal-pain-causes-treatments\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">abdomen<\/a> that empties waste into a bag.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>At the time, says Hughes, she was very sick and in and out of the hospital. Still, she knew that once she made the decision, there was no going back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I was going to have to give up a lot in living with an ostomy, but the truth is that I gave up nothing and gained more than I had imagined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have had an ostomy for over 8 years and it has dramatically increased my quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For others struggling with the decision, she says, \u201cTalk to your doctor and talk to someone who has lived with an ostomy. \u2026 I realize now that I had a flawed perspective on what living with an ostomy would be like prior to my surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt, says Hughes, that Crohn\u2019s changed her life, but not always for the worse, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving with a chronic illness will change your life.
